About HighlandStakes

HighlandStakes is an independent editorial guide to UK in-play sportsbooks. We open real accounts, place live wagers, time cash-outs with a stopwatch, and score streaming quality frame-by-frame — then publish the data.

Who we are

HighlandStakes was founded by a small group of former trading-floor analysts who noticed a gap in the UK betting-review market: most affiliate sites ranked operators by welcome bonus size, not by the factors that matter during a live match — cash-out execution time, in-play market availability at the 80th minute, and whether a stream stays live when the match is at its most volatile.

The bench comprises three people with day-job backgrounds in quantitative analysis, broadcast media, and consumer-finance compliance. None of us works for, or holds equity in, any of the operators we review. Our income derives entirely from affiliate commissions on reader referrals — a model we describe in detail on the home page disclosure block and on this page.

The "table" metaphor is deliberate. Like a snooker table, the playing surface must be level and the rules consistent across every frame. We apply the same five-axis rubric to every operator in every review cycle. No operator can pay for a higher position, a faster turnaround, or the removal of a negative data point from our published dataset.

Our review process

Each review cycle begins with account opening — we register as standard retail customers using personal debit cards. We do not use operator-provided test accounts, which can behave differently from live customer accounts during high-traffic periods.

We then fund each account to £100 and place a series of in-play bets across football, horse racing, and tennis, chosen to maximise cash-out trigger conditions. Each cash-out request is timed from click to confirmation receipt. We run this test across three separate match days per operator, then average the readings.

Streaming quality is assessed subjectively by two bench members independently, then averaged. We check stream availability for a fixed basket of events across each operator's live-streaming library. Market depth is counted at the 15th, 45th, and 75th minute of a live Premier League match, then averaged.

Scores across the five axes are combined using the weighting scheme published on the methodology page. Operators are ranked by composite score, highest first. Commercial relationships have no access to the scoring process and are not known to the scorer at the time of scoring.

Our commercial model — transparency first

HighlandStakes earns affiliate commissions. When a reader follows a link from this site to an operator and registers, that operator pays us a referral fee. The size of the fee varies by operator and is not disclosed individually, but the existence of the commercial relationship is disclosed on every page that carries operator links.

Our editorial policy explicitly bars commercial teams from influencing rankings. Operators are informed of their composite score before publication and may submit factual corrections only — not requests to revise the score. We publish factual corrections with a note when they result in a rank change.

We review the operator list annually and add or remove operators based solely on editorial criteria: active UKGC licence, availability of in-play markets, and minimum market depth to support a meaningful bench test. No payment has ever been accepted or solicited in exchange for inclusion in the rankings.
